BMW widens U.S. lead over Mercedes after June 2019 sales
BMW more than doubled its U.S. sales lead over Mercedes-Benz in June. Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 7.5 percent in June 2019 for a total of 31,627 over the 29,407 vehicles sold in June 2018. Sales of the Spartanburg, SC-built BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle topped 7,000 (7,052) units in June, nearing record levels, and driving BMW brand sales to their fifth consecutive month of growth. Other notable performers in June included the X5 Sports Activity Vehicle (4,473), X7 Sports Activity Vehicle (2,214), 3 Series Sedan (4,927) and 5 Series Sedan (6,259).
While BMW sales dipped 1.1 percent in the first half of 2019, BMW built a lead over Mercedes of more than 9,000 units.
Sales for Mercedes were little changed in June from a year ago at 26,196 units, leaving the Daimler division down 7.2 percent in the first half. Deliveries plunged more than 30 percent for both the C-class sedan and GLS crossover.
Audi of America reported that its sales for the month of June 2019 decreased by 0.3 percent to 19,409 vehicles, from last year.
Porsche Cars North America announced 5,205 units sold in June 2019, which is an all time record for any June in history. Sales are up 2.8 percent in 2019.
Tesla does not break out its results on a monthly basis, but rather by quarter. For the quarter, Tesla said it delivered 95,200 vehicles, a new quarterly record for the automaker that more than doubled the 40,740 deliveries it reported during the same three months of 2018.
